Name: Michael Caines

D.O.B: 03/01/1969

Bio: Michael Caines is an English chef, who has previously been awarded two Michelin Stars whilst at Gidleigh Park, at the time the youngest chef to achieve this accolade, as well as winning Chef of the Year at The Catey Awards in 2001.

In 2004, Caines went into partnership with Andrew Brownsword and together they founded ABode, a fast-growing group of boutique hotels, which all include Michael Caines dining establishments.

In 2006, Michael Caines went on to receive the fantastic accolade that is a MBE for Services to the Hospitality Industry. Soon after in 2007, he also achieved the “AA Chefs’ Chef of the Year 07-08” award, which demonstrates just how highly he is held in the industry as this is voted for by his peers.

Gidleigh Park, whilst Caines was Executive Head Chef, was recently voted Number One in the Sunday Times and Hardens Top 100 Restaurants, where the venue achieved the top spot for Best Place to Stay and Best Wine List. The Bath Priory, whose Head Chef, Sam Moody, has developed his own style under Michael’s Guidance came in the top 3 in the South West and took 39th place overall.

Name: John Douglas Torode

D.O.B: 23/07/1965

Bio: John Torode moved to the UK in the 1990’s, where he began working at Conran Group’s restaurants. He is currently best known for presenting MasterChef and related spin-off shows.

He began his career after he left school to attend catering college, aged 16. After his move to the United Kingdom in 1991, Torode started working at Le Pont de la Tour and Qualino’s as a sous chef, working under Terence Conran. Upon his first meeting with Conran, Torode asked his fellow chefs who the nutter was, as Conran arrived in the kitchen wearing a coffee stained shirt, whilst asking for Figs to be put on the menu as he held a bag in his hands.

From 1996 until 2000, Torode became a regular feature on ITV’s This Morning but decided to end his run on the show as he didn’t want to be “the celebrity chef”.

Along with his TV appearances, Torode has also released a series of cookbooks, one of which, The Mezzo Cookbook, won the James Beard Foundation Award for ‘Best Food Photography’.

Where can you see him? John Torode will be at the upcoming Great Food and Drink Festival at Lincoln Castle. This is the first time this event has taken place at this specific venue, so we cannot wait to see what treats he cooks up in our Kitchen Theatre.

The Great Food and Drink Festival at Lincoln Castle will take place on September 16th-17th with Torode appearing on the Saturday of the two-day event.

Pork Farms show support for Newstead Abbey Great Food and Drink Festival

Pork Farms, the UK’s favourite pork pie brand has signed up as a headline sponsor for the Great Food and Drink Festival at Newstead Abbey.

The festival is one of the highlights of the summer calendar in Nottingham and, as one the region’s key local businesses, Pork Farms wanted to support the event.

Following a fantastic three days exhibiting at the Nottingham Food & Drink Festival, The Butchers Bar & Steakhouse will be returning to the Derby Food and Drink Festival on 17th/18th June as sponsors of the event.

Arriva Midlands provide travel to the Big Bake at Markeaton Park

Arriva Midlands are delighted to be involved with the Great Food and Drink Festival Big Bake as part of our mission to connect Derby.

Visitors to the event can leave the car at home and travel in style in our comfortable and modern buses, which are fitted with complimentary Wi Fi and USB ports.

Arriva will be running a special shuttle service to The Big Bake - Great Food and Drink Festival from Derby bus station on Saturday and Sunday. The service will run from the station at 9.10am and then run every 30 minutes until the last bus leaves Markeaton Park at 5.25pm.

The event will also be served by our regular Number 9 Derby Albert Street to Mackworth Radbourne Lane service, travelling via Markeaton Park and Mackworth Estate, running every 20 minutes through the day on Saturday and every 30 minutes on Sunday.

A special return ticket will be available on both the shuttle and the number 9 service for the Big Bake, at £3 for an adult ticket and £5 for a family day saver (for two adults and up to three children).
